Movies

Here are a few movies of long proboscis Philoliche horse flies both pollinating and sucking blood.
Here, Philoliche aethiopica is visiting Watsonia densiflora near Underberg, KZN, South Africa. It is interesting to note the number of times the fly enters each flower.
This is Philoliche gulosa biting my field assistant's leg (that's his calf). Notice how she folds the longer section of the proboscis (the labium) under her body as she bites. The labium is only retracted during or while preparing to bite. Otherwise, Philoliche flies fly with the proboscis projecting forward.
